Biography
About
Dennis Massar, a dancer, dance maker and dance teacher based in Arnhem. He completed his studies at ArtEZ University of the Arts in Arnhem, where he developed himself as a contemporary dancer. During his time at the academy, he discovered his passion and love for inclusive dance and choreography. This is something that still drives him today.
Dennis is active both nationally and internationally as a dancer, maker, and teacher.
The creative process, being a maker, is what excites him most. During his creative process, he uses his background in contemporary dance. For Dennis, these processes are the most fulfilling. He loves being in the studio and diving into physical research. He sees this process as "a playground where you’re allowed to play". A space for experimentation, new insights, ideas, and the start of lifelong connections and friendships. Core values you will always see in his choreographies are inclusivity and accessibility.
The themes in Dennis’s work are often centred around forms of communication.
Artistic inspiration
Dennis’s artistic inspiration and starting point is sign language. For him, sign language is a physical way of expressing through movement. He sees a connection between dance and sign language and that connection has become the foundation of his artistic journey. This inspiration comes from his personal experience as a deaf dancer.
Through his artistic starting point he aims to build a bridge between the hearing world and the deaf community. He sees this bridge as an opportunity to make dance more accessible for deaf people, and hopes to inspire them through his work as a choreographer and teacher. By doing that, he also aims to create opportunities for deaf people to develop their creativity, self- expression and self-awareness.
Inclusion and accessibility
In both his professional and personal life, accessibility and inclusion are top priorities for Dennis.
He believes it is important to have a diverse range of dancers on stage. It will make the dancescene richer! For Dennis it is important he works inclusive and accessible!
Within dance inclusion, his passion lies with people with hearing impairments.
